Anna is thirteen and starting seventh grade with her best friend Maya, desperate to be liked, kissed, and taken seriously by kids half her actual age. She's anxious, earnest, and painfully self-aware in flashes, then completely oblivious the next moment—chasing popularity while flinching at every small humiliation school throws at her.

The joke and the ache both come from Konkle playing this thirteen-year-old as a grown woman with zero winking distance—she commits fully to the braces, the bad perm, the mortifying crush logic, so the comedy never curdles into mockery of actual kids. It's cringe built entirely on tenderness for who Anna used to be.
