Ann Latimer

Ann Latimer belongs to the comfortable set of Milton mill society, one of the young women who circle the Thorntons at dinners and parties. She is polished, sociable, and clearly regarded by some as a suitable match for Mr. Thornton, though she herself seems merely content to be admired and included.

She works as social wallpaper with teeth: a reminder of the world Thornton is supposed to want, and of how little he wants it. Lucy Brown plays her with easy, unthreatening charm, letting the character's very suitability become the quiet joke of the scenes she's in.
