Animatronio

Animatronio in Futurama (1999), played by David Herman.

Animatronio turns up as one of the parade of odd, single-episode faces that populate the Futurama universe — a minor figure whose name hints at something built rather than born, dropped into the show's sprawling background of robots, aliens and future-New-New-York eccentrics without much fanfare.

David Herman is one of Futurama's great utility voices, capable of sliding into a small part and giving it a distinct texture without stealing focus from the leads. Even a passing character benefits from that kind of vocal specificity, the sense that someone thought carefully about how this odd little name should sound out loud.

Animatronio was created by Leonardo da Vinci, as an artist model while that great thinker lived on Earth. When Leonardo returned to his Planet (Vinci), he left behind Animatronio to guide the secret shadow group of intellectuals that would follow.
