Andy Millman spends his days as a background extra on film sets, forever an unnamed face behind the stars he resents for barely noticing him. He wants a proper speaking part, a chance to be seen as a real actor, and he's not shy about saying so, even as his awkwardness and simmering bitterness keep undercutting him.

Gervais builds on the cringe he perfected with David Brent but adds real yearning underneath the self-sabotage — Andy isn't just tactless, he's aware of it, which makes every flinch land harder. The show lets fame's absurdity humiliate him slowly, and Gervais plays that slow humiliation with a comedian's exact timing.
