Alphonse Elric

Alphonse Elric is a suit of armor with nothing inside it but a soul, bound there by his older brother after a forbidden alchemical experiment went wrong. He travels the country with Edward, hunting clues about the Philosopher's Stone, and for all his hulking size he's soft-spoken, courteous, and quick to worry over cats, kids, and his brother's temper.

The show plays a constant, quiet trick on you: the biggest, most intimidating body in the room belongs to the gentlest character in it. Rie Kugimiya gives him a voice full of warmth and restraint, so his patience never reads as passivity. He's the moral ballast of the story, and the mystery of what he's actually lost keeps deepening.
