Albert "Chalky" White

Chalky White runs the Black bootlegging operation in Atlantic City, a self-made man who never learned to read but built himself into someone Nucky Thompson has to deal with as an equal. He dresses immaculately, speaks carefully, and carries an undertone of violence beneath the composure — a man who has clawed his standing out of a world built to deny it to him.

Michael K. Williams gives Chalky a stillness that reads as both dignity and threat, letting silences do work that dialogue could cheapen. The writing never lets him be just a gangster archetype — his rage at being patronized, even by allies, gives the show its sharpest lens on race and power in the Prohibition era.
