Albert Arkwright

Arkwright runs a cramped corner shop with a miser's devotion and a showman's flair, forever chasing pennies and pursuing his long-suffering assistant Granville's affections toward the widowed Nurse Gladys Emmanuel next door. He stutters when flustered, wields his till like a weapon, and treats every transaction as a small performance of cunning and charm.

Barker builds the stammer into the comic architecture itself, timing jokes around the stutter rather than despite it, so the character's speech becomes the punchline's engine. Arkwright's tightfistedness never curdles into cruelty; there's real affection under the scheming, which is why his shabby little empire of string and stale biscuits feels lived-in rather than mean.
