Alan (Dad)

Alan is Josh's father, an amiable, slightly awkward man trying to hold his family together after his ex-wife's breakdown. He's dating a much younger girlfriend, prone to well-meaning but clumsy advice, and clearly loves his son even when he doesn't quite know how to help him.

David Roberts plays Alan with a gentle, unforced ordinariness that never tips into caricature — the dad-jokes and dorky sincerity land as real rather than sitcom shorthand. The performance finds quiet dignity in a man who is trying his best and often getting it slightly wrong, which makes him funny and touching in the same breath.
