Adora Crellin rules Wind Gap from a wide white porch, the town's most prominent hostess and heir to its hog farm fortune. She fusses over her younger daughter Amma with theatrical tenderness while keeping her returning older daughter Camille at arm's length, all honeyed manners and unspoken judgment.

Clarkson plays Southern gentility as a held breath, every soft vowel doing the work of a threat. The writing lets Adora's care curdle into control so gradually you doubt your own unease, and Clarkson never tips her hand — she just keeps smiling until the smile becomes the most frightening thing in the house.
