Abigail Carlson

Abigail is Madeline's teenage daughter, caught between two households and two mothers after her parents' divorce. She's smart, principled, and increasingly restless with the polish of Monterey life, drawn instead to causes and boys her mother finds alarming. She wants to matter, and to be taken seriously as more than a child.

Newton plays Abigail's idealism without condescension, letting the character's rebellion feel like genuine conviction rather than a plot device to torment Madeline. The push-pull between mother and daughter gives the show some of its sharpest, funniest, and most tender scenes, and Newton holds her own against Reese Witherspoon's live-wire energy.
