Abbey Bartlet

Abbey Bartlet is a practicing physician first, First Lady second, married to the President but with a full professional identity and a low tolerance for the ways the White House swallows people whole. She's sharp-tongued, protective of Jed, and unwilling to disappear into ceremonial obligation. She wants a marriage of equals, even inside an institution built to prevent that.

Stockard Channing plays her as someone who has already won every argument in this marriage worth winning, which makes the ones still open crackle. The show lets her be a doctor with real opinions about her husband's health rather than a decorative spouse, and Channing's dry, unimpressed delivery keeps the White House from ever fully charming her.
